WHY IT MATTERS
Right now, one in 320 women will die. That is seven times higher than the U.S. Medical experts state a high maternal mortality rate correlates to medical access.
Many of these mothers are poor, undocumented women, with little or no prenatal care. Many of these women are from Haiti and their death rate is 3 times higher than their Dominican counterparts. Maternal Hemorrhaging is an exacerbator. The hospitals are equipped for 1,500 to 2,000 births. However, they are handling 12,000 to 13,000. Maternal and prenatal care should be a right, not a bargaining tool.
We dedicate ourselves to giving the poor and underserved a voice, by making them seen and heard. The elderly are often overlooked.
They are unable to advocate and protect themselves adequately. They face huge and growing challenges in nearly every aspect of their lives. They struggle with the basic medical needs.
The language barrier and lack of language training can be life-threatening. As the undocumented Haitian migrants, citizens struggle to articulate and verbalize their concerns.
At ST. JAMES COMMUNITY CENTER, we believe in solutions, while putting supportive services in place, to give the poor and underserved a voice, where they are seen and heard.
